CHAPTER TEN

The sun was shining into my window, bathing me in a golden glow and painting my closed eyelids red. I was tangled in my blanket, one foot wrapped up like a burrito while the other lay on top. I hadn’t bothered to change out of my black dress, and the skirt was tangled in the blanket was making it difficult to escape. When I was finally free, I stood up, unsteady on my feet.

The emotions of the previous night had left me feeling raw and vulnerable. I pushed away the heaviness, remembering that Drekvic had been a child once. He had a family and he had lost them, just like me. He just wanted to put his world back together, and I wanted to save an important piece of mine.

Our obsessions matched, and I bit my lip, worried. If I was like Drekvic, did that mean I would become as scary as him? I sighed, sitting back down on the bed and rubbing my temples. I felt like I hadn’t slept at all, and chills ran down my arms as I thought about what might happen.

I knew Drekvic could come to me in Chester’s house. Chester wouldn’t check on me unless he heard us talking or if I shouted. I could do this and be done before Chester found out anything. Jana was almost free.

Would she be proud of me? I wondered as I stood up again and walked to the bathroom, planning on taking a shower. Jana wouldn’t give the cairn to Drekvic in order to save herself. Would she be mad that I was doing it to save her?

I pushed those worries out of my head as the warm water of the shower hit my face. No matter what happened, I wasn’t going to let him keep her.

The quick shower washed away the rest of my melancholy and I got dressed in a plain t-shirt and jeans. Feeling more normal than I had in weeks, I sat on the floor and pulled out the velvet bag with the cairn from my purse.

Once I gave Drekvic his stone, our bargain would be complete and he would give me Jana’s soul. I would be able to figure out how to get her to the Beyond. I could ask Chester. Then all I’d have to do was figure out how to get home.

The cairns held a lot of power. I could sense it even through the bag. If Drekvic was planning on misusing that power, I’d have to do something about it, but Jana came first. I’d fix whatever I broke after she was safe.

I took a deep breath, smelling the faint dusty scent of the guest room. I relaxed my shoulders and found the calm center in all the chaos inside me. I wrapped myself in my magic, protecting my heart and mind from intrusion.

When I was ready, I took another deep breath and whispered the siekewa’s name.

He appeared, just as he had before. He saw me sitting in the middle of the room and looked immediately concerned.
